Martin fire and bloodSo while audiences who have already read that novel have a pretty good idea of where this first season of the spin-off is going, there are still plenty of unknown areas to explore. One of these mysteries concerns Harrenhal Castle, and while Fire & Blood makes it clear that the castle suffered a brutal fire, it leaves the cause of the hell in question. But during this week’s episode of House of the Dragon, we now know exactly what happened on that fateful night.

Harinal, which was burned by dragons in the invasion of Aegon, has long been considered a cursed castle. Every devastating event that occurred in the castle was blamed for the curse, including the fire that killed Lionel and Harwin Strong. The cause of the fire is not officially mentioned in the books, but fans have had their theories. The new episode of House of the Dragon confirmed that one of those theories was indeed true. Lars Strong, Lionel’s son and Harwin’s brother, was behind the fire.
It’s all revealed, in the book and beyond Dragon House, that all of Rainera’s children were born by Harwin Strong, not by husband Lenore Villarion. While Viserys won’t directly address the problem, Alicent wants to do something about it, and has reported the problem to Ser Larys Strong. He decides to take matters into his own hands.
Late in the episode, Larrys approaches a group of prisoners who are scheduled to be executed. He tells them about a proposal that will give them their freedom in exchange for doing him a favor and cutting their tongues. These same men appear at Harrenhal in the final moments of the episode, and start the fire that killed Harwin and Lyonel.
This solves multiple problems simultaneously for Alicent, although she makes it clear that she did not ask for the fire to happen. This takes Harwen out of the equation, preventing Rhaenyra from feeling happy while keeping the family free of scandal. This also allows another person to step in as the King’s Hand, a position that Lionel held and which he tried to relinquish before his death. Viserys will not accept his resignation. Alicent can now influence the appointment of another person to this position.
Larrys is now the only man left in House Strong, given that Harwin’s sons are not considered his own. Harrenhal will inherit everything that belongs to his father.
